The purpose of this activity is to help you find out how much money you will need to move to your own place.

Before you move to your own place, you need to consider the advantages and disadvantages of living on your own. One of the most important factors to consider is expense. This activity will give you some idea of how much you can expect to pay for a furnished or unfurnished apartment.

First, determine the average rent per month for both furnished and unfurnished places. As a guide, use the advertisements in the newspaper. Consider only one- and two-bedroom places. Call to find out how much security deposit you would need to pay for an average apartment.

Next, list all the items of furniture that would be needed for an unfurnished place. Write down the estimated cost and where you could buy each item. Decide whether, on the average, it is cheaper to rent a furnished or an unfurnished place. Use the chart below to write down your expenses.

Average Rent In _______________________________(your city)

Now call the utility companies and the telephone company to find out how much the hook-up charges are.

Finally, estimate your starting out expenses for personal supplies, such as shampoo; household sup- plies, such as cleaning products; and kitchen staples, such as flour. You may wish to ask your parents or friends about items you should include.

1. What are your estimated costs for moving into a furnished apartment? _________________________________________

2. How much money would you need to move into an unfurnished apartment? _____________________________________
